What is a typical acupuncture treatment like?
Answer:
At the initial appointment, patients complete a health history questionnaire. The acupuncturist then interviews the patient, asking about his or her primary health concern, lifestyle habits, diet, emotions, menstrual cycle, stress, and sensitivity to foods, temperature, and seasons. There are also three pulse points at the wrist of each hand that the acupuncturist will assess to further determine the health of the 12 meridians.
After the interview, the acupuncturist provides a diagnosis and begins treatment. The patient will be given an idea of how many appointments will be necessary, depending on the length and severity of the symptoms. Since Chinese medicine treats the root cause of the disorder, treatment time varies. Usually around 3-9 appointments is necessary. However, many conditions take years to develop as a result of poor eating habits, rigorous athletic training, or respiratory disorders. Chronic conditions, such as these, take longer to treat but respond very well to Chinese medicine.
